Conflicker computer worm is no April Fool's joke

Personal computers and laptops already infected with Conficker could automatically be linked to the servers operated by the hackers

Cyber security experts are warning that a new variation of Conficker, a fast-spreading computer worm also known as Downadup, could attack millions of computers on Wednesday -- April Fool's Day.

Personal computers and laptops already infected with Conficker could automatically be linked to the servers operated by the hackers.

Esteban O. Farao, a consultant with Enterprise Risk Management, a Miami security consulting company, said the worm is not destroying files or stealing data, but it has the capability to do so.

"The main concern about this worm is that it is capable of downloading additional code from the hacker's Web site or through a peer-to-peer connection," Farao said. "Consequently it can bring more functionalities or receive instructions."
Experts say it's unknown whether the worm will cause havoc or merely turn out to be an April's Fool prank. But people can protect their computers by using security software.

Howard Schmidt, a former White House cyber security adviser, said computer users need to download an application of Microsoft software to detect and disable the worm.

Experts also advise keeping your security applications and operating systems updated.

"The most interesting thing about this worm is that every time someone finds out a way to get rid of the worm, it reinvents itself with more rigor and better technology," Schmidt said.

Authorities have not identified the culprits behind the worm or their intentions. Microsoft has offered a $250,000 reward to bring the Conficker creator to justice.

The Conficker worm, which has infected 10 million computers outside the United States, is a program that exploits weaknesses in Microsoft's Windows operating system including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

Largest Federal Tobacco Tax Increase

Tobacco users are facing a huge financial hit as the single largest federal tobacco tax increase ever go into effect Wednesday, April 1st of 2009.
Tobacco taxes are increasing to finance a major expansion of health insurance for children.

Cigarette per-pack tax climbs from 39 cents to $1.01. Tax on chewing tobacco will go up from 19.5 cents per pound to 50 cents. The total expected to be raised over the 4 1/2 year-long health insurance expansion is nearly $33 billion.

Medical groups are hoping this will help persuade smokers to quit.

Congress is also considering legislation to empower the FDA to regulate tobacco. President Obama, who has agonized over his own cigarette habit, said he would sign such a bill.

Langoustine Sales Down

The export slump has forced shellfish merchants to look for alternative outlets for the 33,782 tonnes of langoustine landed at Scottish ports each year. Some, like Cook, are focusing on the domestic market. He has opened a fish shop next door to his fish restaurant, Marynka, in Linlithgow, West Lothian, where he hopes to encourage the sale of langoustine.

“We are trying to let people know that this is a top-quality product and not as expensive as they think. We can have them for sale just 24 hours after they were caught,” he says. See Full Story

A langoustine is a marine crustacean which looks a little like a miniature lobster and a lot like the river dwelling crayfish. Its proper name is Nephrops norvegicus. It can grow up to a foot in length and is prized for its delicious tail meat. Smaller langoustine have their upper parts discarded and their tails used for scampi. Larger langoustine are sold to be cooked whole. Then the meat from the tail and, in larger specimens the claws, is eaten either as part of a more complex dish or straight from the shell. They are a common feature in the traditional French bistro seafood platter and a very important element in Spanish cuisine

Seth Curry to transfer to Duke Blue Devils

Seth Curry is joining Coach K and the Duke Blue Devils.

Curry's father Dell told The Associated Press on Sunday night that his son will transfer to Duke next season.

Seth Curry scored 23 and 18 points in his first two college games, and he scored a season-high 35 at VMI in January before the largest crowd in Keydets history. He was held to eight points in his final game with the Flames, an 88-65 loss to James Madison last week in the CollegeInsider.com tournament.

Dell Curry starred at Virginia Tech in the 1980s — well before the Hokies joined the conference — before becoming one of the NBA's most prolific 3-point shooters.

Stephen Curry was virtually ignored by the ACC's schools coming out of high school three years ago and instead wound up at Davidson, where he blossomed into one of the biggest draws in the sport after leading the Wildcats to within a missed 3-pointer of last year's Final Four.

Potfest Movie?

Fan reaction to a joke in the end credits of Beerfest has inspired the makers of Beerfest to consider making a sequel: Potfest.

Here is an excerpt from an interview at IGN

"There's one reaction to Beerfest we're surprised about," says Kevin Heffernan. "We're always asked, 'Are your going to make Potfest? It was just a joke. We really weren't serious about it until everyone said they loved the idea so much. A lot of people are really interested in whether or not we're going to make it, so we've been considering the potential for this. We're talking about doing something, but it's just talk right now."

And one of the things they're talking about is making Potfest an animated movie.

Heffernan explains, "It will, of course, be a sequel to Beerfest. But we're thinking maybe we might make this one animated. An R-rated, animated comedy. You don't see many of those."
